What to expect when you visit?

Children's Orthopaedics Surgeon

Initially the consultation is with the parent(s) while the child listens. In this way the child gets familiar with the situation and can then join is as much as they want. The child nearly always needs to be examined; this is done with clothes on and off, usually walking and standing and on the couch. It is clear that even quite young children can be shy about taking clothes off so we take it one step at a time, for example just shoes and socks at first. Underwear always stays on, except for a baby’s nappy, which might have to come off for hip and spine examination. There are toys for the patient and siblings but they are not always needed. I will discuss everything I can with the parents before they leave, but sometimes I need to see the results of an x-ray or a scan, or I will seek the opinion of another consultant. I put everything into a letter which goes to the family, and the GP if appropriate. Further letters may be needed. Follow-up visits are arranged through my office.
